In the passages An American Horror Story and Hunger of Memory they are both about immigration. An American Horror story is about a Vietnamese family escaping Vietnam on a fishing boat. They ended up in a refugee camp for months, after a while they finally got cleared to come to the United States. During their journey the family got split up multiple times. The family was flown into Portland Oregon and two of them were left in Vietnam.

   Phong Dinh was sent to reeducation camp, he escaped from the camp on June 12, 1978 and try to escape Vietnam for 5 years and tried 25 times and failed. Finally in 1983 he was in the Philippians and then made it to the United States. The oldest child was left behind and was sent to refugee camp in Hong Kong. The Story was basically about Family trying to come to America and all the obstacles they had to overcome, but at the end when they got to America they succeeded with job and opportunities.

       In Hunger of Memory it is about the author reminiscing about his childhood. During his childhood he mainly spoke Spanish. He didn’t live in a Mexican neighborhood he lived “Among all the los gringos” as it says in line 5. The los gringos are white people I believe. In the passage he also talks about how he felt different among all the other people. They were the only foreigners in the neighborhood. He felt like he couldn’t relate to the los gringos. It’s also about how the author watched his parent’s struggle speaking English with the los gringos, but when his parents spoke with other Spanish speaking families it was natural and reminded him of home. As

it states on pg.164 line 14 he says he feels related to the Spanish speakers because they share the same language.

  

     These stories are both about foreigners coming to America for a better opportunity. In the stories the families both struggle, but they have to overcome a lot to achieve what they want.

      The theme of both of the passages is living in two different cultures. In American horror story the family goes through a lot to finally get to America. On page 155 “there is no other country that has taken in so many people with different cultures and gained so much”. In the story hunger of memory he talks about growing up with so many different kinds of people in America and the struggle of being a native Spanish speaker. He had hard time adjusting, but in both of the stories it’s about a family coming over their struggles and succeeding in America. Another theme of the story is what is lost can be hard to overcome but at the end of the day it was for better.  In American story they lose a lot but they have to overcome it to gain the good.

winter break

       During winter break I didn't do anything that spectacular. I did the same monotonous things for the three weeks we were off. I couldn't wait to come back to school and see what this semester would be like. I felt like three weeks off was too long.

Over the break I would stay up until the sun start coming up and fall asleep and didn’t wake up until late afternoon. I stayed up watching Netflix eating junk and on social media, just like most average teenagers. On Netflix I watched this show called freaks and geeks with 2 of my favorite actors Seth Rogen and James Franco. Freaks and geeks was about high school students and typical high school problems. I fell in love within the first episode. I later then got bored because I finished the whole season in two days.

      The highlight of my break was Christmas. I love Christmas even though this year was a little different without some of my family. Christmas is one of my favorite holidays I just love to see my family altogether. This year was different because most of my family was in Georgia. That was where me and my mom were supposed to go, unfortunately that didn’t happen. I was really looking forward to go and see my cousins and aunties. Instead we stayed in LA and everyone came over my house and we ate and exchanged presents. For Christmas I got everything I wanted I was so surprised. Then later on that day I went to my cousin house. At my cousin house we played games. The next morning we went to the mall and I spent the money and the gift cards I got for Christmas.

          

   Also over the break I went shopping with one of my best friends. We went to the mall and went into 20 different stores. She then got mad at me and said I was to undeceive on want to buy and said she would never come with me to the mall again. After that we went to this restaurant and two of my other friends met us u there. We at dinner at Bj’s, I had fun because it was my first it was my first time there. Later on we uber’d back to my house. My mom was so kind to let all three of them spend a night. We stayed up all night gossiping and we did facials. The next morning everyone returned home and my boring vacation continued.  

    Most of my break was sleep and relaxation but that got boring after a while. I wanted to do something fun. Over the break I wish i could have went to big bear because I never been to the snow. That would’ve been fun or go to an amusement park. Although I did enjoy my break not having to worry about school work and waking up early to get on the bus.
